17.2804 Cultural Advantage and Japan's Postwar Economic Miracle.
This paper argues that some elements of pre-World War II Japanese culture proved to be advantages to the processes of economic reconstruction as they took hold in the first decades after 1945. If the Japanese recovery is looked at in terms of class and economy only, the Japanese defeat in World War II signaled a complete break from the imperial ethos, which had dominated national culture and contributed to practically every aspect of Japanese cultural and economic life. When Japanese post-war economic development is explored in ways which include cultural advantages, however, the so-called "miracle" of reconstruction begins to seem somewhat more predictable. 15 pgs. 38 f/c. 16b.

18.2847 The Americanization of Japanese Culture.
The following paper is an analysis on the 'Americanization' of Japanese culture. Four distinct areas of culture will be analyzed, and in turn, some general analysis will be presented in terms of assigning the causes for this trend. In particular, focus will be given toward understanding how this process must be understood with the 'transformation of identity' that had been taking place in this context. 5.5 pgs. 10 f/c. 1b.

19.3760 Japan, Lifetime Employment.
This essay discusses how Japan has achieved very high levels of economic development. It shows that while Americans might consider lifetime employment to be a minimizer of hard work and incentive, the Japanese occupational system still achieved its objectives. Lifetime employment did offer incentive to work hard. Nonetheless, the system of lifetime employment is now withering away in Japan, as the new generation is more individualistic and self-centred. This development also has its advantages, since the resulting competition will boost more economic power. 5 pgs. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

20.3866 The Origins of the Japanese Language.
This paper will demonstrate, the current dominant paradigm considers Japanese to be genetically linked to the family of Altaic languages, which includes Korean, Mongolian and Turkic. Although other linguists contend that Japanese may best be considered a hybrid language - containing strata of several linguistic elements - the Altaic connection appears to be the most well-defined at present. Through a discussion of the complexities involved in the question of the origins of Japanese, it will be argued that the strength of this genetic association is such that it seems the inevitable future revisions of this paradigm will - instead of rejecting the thesis altogether - probably only move the connection between the oldest ancestor of Japanese and Proto-Altaic further back into the past to a common source older than Proto-Altaic. 10 pgs. 21.3923 The Japanese Comfort Women.
This paper discusses the issue of the "comfort women" -- the victims of the Japanese government's compulsory prostitution program during the Second World War. These victims of sexual slavery are still to receive recognition. The essay shows how the Japanese government's refusal to compensate any of the surviving women reflects the government's misogynist attitude in general. 10 pgs. Bibliography lists 9 sources.
